1. The Water Research Institute is a government-subsidized organization managed by the Ministry of the Environment of the Slovak Republic. It is a leading scientific-research institute with an (inter)national scope, conducting comprehensive water management research and other activities resulting from the needs of water management in Slovakia.

Its core activities include scientific research, development programmes as well as professional consulting and advisory services in the field of water management and water-ecology. WRI scientists lead research in various areas including hydrology, hydraulics, water quality, and water treatment technology.

The institute continually carries out updating of basic data for the national conceptions, water management documents, and legislative tools and provides database administration of the national water management information system. WRI also comprises the National Water Reference Laboratory, which conducts water analyses and interprets biological, chemical, physical and bacteriological tests of water.

WRI research is important to the conservation and protection of Slovakia’s water resources.

Since 2001, the institute is strongly involved in the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive.

Nowadays, WRI forms a core scientific-research base for the water management sector. The institute has five departments: Technical Standardization and Information, Hydrology and Hydraulics, Water Management Development, Water Quality and Water Treatment Technology, National Water Reference Laboratory for Slovakia.

WRI has 200 employees, of which about 50% have a university degree.

2. Hydro-Engineering Institute is independent, market oriented scientific and research organization.

Our activities encompass science and research work, education, planning, consulting as well as revision of investment and technical documents from the fields of water and environment.

We have independent, market oriented Laboratory for Water Quality Research as well as Team for Detection and Measurement of Water Losses in water supply systems.

Our Laboratory is fully equipped to efficiently and precisely do the analysis of water and wastewater quality as well as solid waste and sludge in accordance with relevant regulation and standards.

Out Team for detection and measurement of losses is equipped to detect losses in all types of water supply systems. In last 5 years our team detected and prevented loss of more than 40.000 m3/d of water, which corresponds to daily demand of a city with 200.000 inhabitants.

Both Institute and its Laboratory are currently in process of certification in accordance with standard EN ISO 9001 and BAS EN ISO 17025, respectively.
